International Conference for Public - Municipal Libraries in Athens
The Steering Committee for the Libraries’ Support organizes an International Conference for public and municipal libraries under the title “Informational Education – the Key to Life Long Learning” in collaboration with the Delegation of the European Commission in Greece and under the auspices of the Ministry of Education in Athens on June 14-16 2006.
The Informational education pertains to the competence of people to express correctly their information needs, focus on the appropriate information, approach it in a critical spirit and use it effectively. Many university libraries offer relevant courses to their students. However, public libraries can play an important role in the dissemination of informational education by providing the wider public with the opportunity to process creatively and convert information and experiences in knowledge, perceptions, and competences.
Successful applications of informational educations will be presented in the conference from public libraries in Germany, France, Spain, United Kingdom, Netherlands, USA, Egypt and Turkey.
Moreover, workshops will operate consisted of few members which will address issues, such as the role of librarians in the IT era, practical application of the informational education for pupils of primary and secondary education, support techniques of the informational education, methods of activating the participation in the process of education and post-graduate studies, etc.
The Steering Committee for the Libraries’ Support is comprised of Goethe Institutes of Athens and Thessaloniki, the French Institute of Athens, the Cervantes Institute, the Ministry of National Education & Religious Affairs, the National Library of Greece, the National Book Center, the Hellenic Association of Librarians and Information Scientists, the National Documentation Center, and the Delegation of the European Commission in Greece.
